What technologies Mumbai gunmen used ? VOIP, GPS, GoogleEarth, Blackberries
Newyork Times reporting that terrorists have become so technologically advanced that they used GPS to reach their destination from Karachi, Pakistan and have used satellite phones to be in touch with the base station. Google Earth aided them to find clear paths of coast to coast movements.
Another interesting technology used is VOIP phones.
The times reporting these interesting abuse of technology by the criminals :
The militant group in Pakistan used VOIP to mask their identities
Indian security forces surrounding the buildings were able to monitor the terrorists’ outgoing calls by intercepting their cellphone signals. But Indian police officials said those directing the attacks, who are believed to be from Lashkar-e-Taiba, a militant group based in Pakistan, were using a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone service, which has complicated efforts to determine their whereabouts and identities.
It is difficult to trace the VOIP calls. The difficulty of tracing made it difficult for authorities to trace the calls to prevent the destruction.
In Mumbai, authorities have declined to disclose the names of the VoIP companies whose services the Lashkar-e-Taiba handlers used, but reports in Indian news media have said the calls have been traced to companies in New Jersey and Austria. Yet investigators have said they are convinced that the handlers who directed the attacks were actually sitting somewhere in Pakistan during the calls.
One senior Lashkar-e-Taiba leader who American officials believe may have played a key role in planning the Mumbai attacks is Zarrar Shah. Mr. Shah, known to be a specialist in communications technology, may have been aware of the difficulties in tracing VoIP.

Google indexes images text with OCRopus
Until now Google did indexing of only text saved PDF documents only and with this technology any pdf document saved as image can be indexed with the help of its open-source OCRopus technology.
OCRopus development is sponsored by Google and is free document analysis and OCR system released under the Apache License. OCRopus uses HP developed Tesseract for character recognition but has its own layout analysis system that is optimized for accuracy. It is intended for high-throughput, high-volume document conversion efforts with image preprocessing and layout analysis; it chops up the scanned document before passing it to Tesseract for line-by-line or character-by-character recognition.Currently, OCRopus uses Tesseract as its only character recognition plugin, but others are expected to be added in the future.
The benefits are many with this technology imaging those dusted government agencies years of paper data that can be scanned and indexed by Google.
If you want to try hands-on -- You can download the OCRopus source distribution by following the Downloads link and then follow the installation instructions linked to from the left menu.

$200 worth Google AdWords free for students - Google Online Marketing Challenge
As the website notes :
The Challenge works like this:
1. Students divide into groups of 3-6, and then receive free online advertising vouchers for Google AdWords worth US$200.
2. The groups recruit a small-to-medium business, under 100 employees, who has a website but doesn’t currently use AdWords.
3. Each group works with the business to set up an AdWords account and structure an effective online marketing campaign.
4. During a 3-week competition window, the groups optimize and refine their campaigns. They must submit two competition reports – one before they begin and one after the campaign ends.
5. Google and a panel of independent academics from all over the world select the winning teams based on the success of their campaign and the quality of their competition reports.
For Google this is like promoting their advertising cash cow to the heights. For students FAQ suggests that in order to choose business - "If you have a local Chamber of Commerce or Small Business Development Office, they always have businesses looking for assistance from smart people like you" . Professors will mentor and work with students and make them understand in online marketing and the Challenge.
To Sum up, I feel this is good project at Google expense for students who want to have web presence for their own business or the business they work for.

Alternative Free Unlimited Storage websites
1) Stixy - For To-dos, Notes, Reminders, photos and file sharing
To share a Stixyboard with friends, family, or your colleagues at work, is as easy as it gets. Sometimes it’s nice or in fact necessary to have an online space for common photos, reminders, files, and so forth. Each Stixyboard has a unique set of members. No one else can see or use your board unless you choose to open your board for public view.
2) Seetoo - Two friends can watch the media file.
3) Google Spreadsheets and Zoho Sheet -- Collaboration of files in real time.
Users can simultaneously work on the same spreadsheet and see the changes made by each other in real time. Check the browser compatibility.
4) Jooce - Virtual desktop like Cyber home away from home.
“Load up your browser-based Jooce desktop with files, music, videos, IM buddy lists, and anything else you might need and you can get to it just by logging in. And Jooce looks and feels like a real desktop, with a slick UI and good responsiveness.”
Currently, there is no limit to the number and size of files you can upload onto your jooce desktop. That’s right, it’s unlimited. So go forth and upload to your heart’s content.
5) Dropbox - good for file storage and membership by invite only
6) Foldershare from Microsoft -- Sharing files and complaints of cheesy interface
7) ADrive - with PCLinuxOS & Firefox - 50GB free storage
Do you use any other file sharing/storage/collaboration sites ? Please share with others via comments.

Google "App"titude challenge for India's Engineering and MBA colleges ends September 15'2008
From India's GoogleApp team :
1. Sign up for the challenge by September 15, 2008.
2. Get approval from your college's administration to implement Google Apps by October 15, 2008.
3. Work with your IT department to implement Google Apps by December 15, 2008.
4. Achieve the highest level of Google Apps usage amongst all participating colleges by January 31, 2009 to be declared the challenge winner!
Here is video of Kellogg ( Northwestern University, Chicago, US) director of technology talks about how they have benefited using Google Apps for their intranet IT solutions:
This in my opinion is good for colleges as Google will assign one Google employee to each team to help answer questions through out the challenge. Drawback is that they are targeting only Engineering and MBA colleges. Google is trying hard to push collaboration tools like its "Google Talk" , "Google Mail" to compete with "Microsoft Instant Messenger", "Outlook" as Microsoft dominates the corporate as well university accounts.

"Cloud Computing" buzz -- what is it ?
"The cloud" aka "The internet" -- computing is a way to access all your data and even applications from any where via Internet. Google Docs is one of the examples of storing, sharing and retrieving documents by anyone form anywhere with any internet accessible PC. The biggest trend is the separation of hardware from software. Cloud Computing is promising trend that changes the way IS manages technology in next five years. All the IT operations can be run from a third party data centers relieving IT from some of the maintainability/support issues.
Analysis:
Cloud computing will be a big part in future of technology. Instead of storing our information on one computer or device, we store them in the clouds – over the internet and are thus accessible via our work computers, home computers and personal devices.
The growing requirement these days is accessibility of documents or applications in a centralized location. Two or three PCs at home and another PC at work, it is difficult to manage and work on same documents from multiple locations. SaaS -- Software as a Service is next big thing I feel that will avoid document versions clutter by making documents available at centralized location. Adobe made its photoshop software -- "Photoshop Express" available free for all online users. No-installation-required version is easy to access and user will get the same photo editing experience as in an desktop installed version.
Amazon has done a great job in commercializing the idea of cloud computing, and of bringing infrastructure as a service to start ups. Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a web service that provides re sizable compute capacity in the cloud. It is designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers.
Does cloud computing makes money for the companies ? May be not for every company that's in cloud computing. Google was able to cash by getting as many people as possible looking at advertising alongside search and other various software offerings.
I think the market is not yet ready for prime time. Free web based apps still lacks some powerful features to replace desktop version. Security is one major area of concern I feel that limits what can be done in "cloud computing".

Google faces legacy system issues
Image by Getty Images via DaylifeGoogle reported that its second quarter profit rose 35% but its flag ship ad business is slowing as the number of paid clicks at the Web giant continued to slow.Summary:
The #1 search engine that redefined internet is facing legacy system issues as they grow bigger and bigger as company. Getting ad money from YouTube has become a challenge for Google. YouTube with one billion plus page views got a meager $200 million last year. The challenge for Google is take their legacy applications which are popular with text ads to next level i.e. video ads. Besides technology issues the advertisers are hesitant to display their ads besides amateur videos. The lessons learned from Google's issues is that continuous focus is required on legacy systems by improving them to stay on top in the business.
Analysis :
I feel part of the revenue loss can be attributed to the cautious steps that Google is taking as infringement law suits are increasingly filed against YouTube business of Google. It is surprising to note that a world class company like Google lacks fully automated billing system for YouTube and the bills are counted manually. Advertisers had to pore over three separate legal contracts for Google sales people to get back to the advertisers shows how worse is the usability of the legacy system. The team found 105 ad sales problems with YouTube and 24 internal systems are touched to customize to what advertisers need, this shows us the growing problems of complicated system. It is good for Google that it faced similar issues in the past with the "Project Drano" because of overlap of sales database and disparate billing systems. With the current problems the "Project Spaghetti" is aimed to fix the issues and start gaining market share. Combining acquired companies sales systems is always a challenge in acquisitions.
