Is CompUSA bankrupt?

Strong rumors are floating in forums and online that CompUSA may close its doors very early.

The very first thing that comes to mind of this news - what will happen to my performance service plans and Mail-In-Rebates from CompUSA?

I had a CompUSA tech visit my place yesterday to fix my HP computer that I bought online at FRYS.com. This tech is doing HP service from CompUSA (like those geek squad guys), all they do is fix your HP computer for free if it is in warranty and also didn't know I qualify for In-Home computer repair service. I wonder what HP does with all its desktop/laptop support if CompUSA goes out of business ?

Last time I think I've walked into a CompUSA store is in the year 2001 to buy a Compaq desktop computer,I have always had an excellent experience with the CompUSA. In early 2007 Dallas-based CompUSA closed more than half of its retail computer and electronics stores.During Black Friday 2007 I was searching for close by Comp USA store location and found they close all compusa within 80-100 miles of my location.Probably the competition is stiff with Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Max, Office Depot and Staples - the irony is almost everyone else sells same thing, with/without the sales/rebates, It is certainly a tough market to be in at this time.

Layoffs and shop closures at Holiday time is the worst thing that can happen to any one.May be good thing is that all laid off CompUSA employees might be able to find the jobs quickly with continuing Holiday shopping.

What about performance service plans, Mail-In-Rebates that every one shopped at COMPUSA this Thanksgiving ? If you are lazy like me then it is time to act on all those rebates and mail them soon to get back (any) COMPUSA rebates.

Cyber Monday and the hype ?

Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving and is historically not the biggest online shopping day ( Statistics show CyberMonday is the only 12th biggest online shopping day of the year). Cyber Monday is the online retail equivalent to Black Friday: Black Friday is associated with traditional brick-and-mortar (B&M) stores, "Cyber Monday" symbolizes a busy day for online retailers Is it just the hype ? Or Can online shoppers really get good online deals in 2007 Cyber Monday ? Cyber Monday online sales in 2004 came in at $380 million, the reports claim.Customer spending on Cyber Monday totaled $608 million in 2006, up 26 percent versus the same day last year.Sure these numbers show retailers are catching up with online deals year over year. What are some of the most-shopped categories last year on Cyber Monday - jewelry,consumer electronics, gourmet food, furniture and home decor, the report said.

Nielsen report found Black Friday traffic to online shopping sites grew 39 percent week-over-week from home, while Cyber Monday retail traffic grew 18 percent week-over-week from work.

Britt Beemer, the founder and CEO of America's Research Group asserted that "Cyber Monday is a hoax. However, the main story of 2006 — which was based on a survey by MasterCard — asserted it was a myth, as records suggested that the peak day online in 2005 was really 5 December (as the Orlando Sentinel put it on 29 November 2006: "Cyber Monday may need to be renamed Cyber Hype").

Also the common belief that "If you wait until "Cyber Monday" you just may get a better deal " says some shoppers who were frustrated with disaapointing Black Friday deals.

Year 2006 Cyber Monday deals trends:

->Shoppers hopped on auction site ubid.com to ring some deals as Up until Cyber Monday (Nov 27th'2006) Ubid ran a ton of $1 Mega Auctions to end on that specific day. Discounted computers, ipods, software, aerobeds, calendar kits, bedding, everything and some are 200+ items deep auctions so there was a good probabilty for a deal.

->What about Dell ? The online gaint had some sort of deals on laptops and other stuff in year 2006

Black Friday software deals are sweet with most of them FREE but the problem is these tons of FREE software deals comes as Mail-In-Rebate items. I don't know how many of my $$ I've lost in these mail-in-rebates. 1)I'm lazy 2) These companies (Remember Buffalo, NY rebate companies?) some times send you to include additional info by which time I already trash my box and the receipts.

Lesson learned hard way -- A much as possible go with non MIR items unless its really adds value even with MIR.

I own Pharos 135 that I bought from Dell lasy year thanksgiving for around $140 and is okay in normal circumstances but really sucks in downtown driving.

This Black Friday the only best GPS deal I can find is Garmin nuvi 660 GPS $399.99 from Best Buy.

Again Black Friday deals on TVs is disappointing. Most of the prices are prices that we see on sale which is not as good to wait in long cold winter nights in line for these. I need a TV upgrade this holidays from 5-year old 51'' SONY HDTV Rear Projection TV to LCD HDTV this year.



These are some of my demanding requirements for my new TV :

Built-In HD Tuner / QAM Tuner : I need this so to get HD channels without cable box, and a QAM Tuners to get scrambled HD Channels.

HDMI Inputs: I missed Toshiba HD-DVD deal but the future is HD DVD players. With PS3's, XBox, HD DVD & BluRay, Series 3 Tivos, and HD Cable boxes using HDMI outputs.

Sharp and Samsungs are great but expensive TVs.Samsung is #1 sold TV in US.
Vizios and Olevia are 2 highly rated bargain brands.
Vizio is also top selling flat panel HDTV brand in America more than Sony and Sharp

As for warranty if you use a major credit card it doubles the manufacturers warranty.

With all this research the best TV deal so far I can see is 46" Sharp Aquos 1080p LCD HDTV for 1299$ from Circuit city.{With coupon stackings like 100$ of 299$ ..the price may come down to 1200$}

I feel there are no BIG deals as far as DSLR’s are concerned for 2007 (I bought my Canon Digital Rebel Xti 10 MP DSLR for $650 at Dell about six months back in a deal - None of the Black Friday deals has that price) , There are good door busters for 8 MP cameras.
